The Story Behind the Music
Music has been part of Barbara Hickey's life for as long as she can remember. Some of her fondest childhood memories are of sitting on her grandparents' living room floor, listening to her grandfather play guitar and sing. Those early moments sparked a love of music that would eventually become a lifelong passion.
Born in Orange, Texas, and raised in the small community of Orangefield, Barbara grew up surrounded by the sounds of Southeast Texas. Her cousin introduced her to the world of classic rock, opening the door to bands like Rush, Boston, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Pink Floyd. Those influences would eventually shape her own musical identity, blending powerful guitar-driven rock with Southern roots, memorable melodies, and a touch of country soul.
Her journey as a guitarist began with a little childhood curiosity and her brother's guitar. Sneaking time with the instrument whenever she could, Barbara discovered an outlet for the music that had captured her imagination. What started as a childhood fascination would eventually become one of the defining passions of her life.
From the Basketball Court to the Stage
Before music took center stage, Barbara was also an accomplished athlete, playing college basketball and competing in track at Lamar University. The competitive spirit, discipline, and determination that once drove her on the court would eventually find a new home onstage.
Throughout the 1990s, Barbara began performing with bands across Southeast Texas, developing her skills as a guitarist, vocalist, and entertainer. Along the way, she learned the value of musical mentorship, the importance of connecting with an audience, and what it takes to deliver a high-energy live performance.
In 2012, she formed The Fanatics, a project that further developed her musical vision and laid the groundwork for what would eventually become The Daybreakers in 2023.
Through every chapter, one thing remained constant: her love of making music and sharing it with others.
Finding Her Own Voice
While Barbara's musical roots run deep in classic rock, her passion for songwriting has given her a voice that is uniquely her own.
Drawing inspiration from the people, places, and experiences that have shaped her life, Barbara writes songs that explore love, faith, freedom, resilience, and the simple moments that stay with us long after they've passed.
Her debut album, What I Am (2015), marked an important milestone, giving her the opportunity to share her original music with the world.
Her second album, Peace of Mind (2022), reflected another chapter in her personal and musical journey. Inspired by her rededication to her Christian faith, the album explored themes of hope, reflection, and spiritual renewal while remaining true to the rock and roll roots that have always defined her sound.
For Barbara, songwriting is more than putting words to music. It's a way to tell stories, preserve memories, and express the things that sometimes can't be said any other way.
The Daybreakers
In 2023, Barbara formed The Daybreakers, bringing together a group of talented musicians who share her passion for powerful performances and great rock and roll.
Drawing from the soaring melodies of Boston and Journey, the guitar-driven energy of Van Halen and ZZ Top, the musical complexity of Rush, and the Southern rock spirit of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Barbara Hickey & The Daybreakers deliver a dynamic blend of classic rock favorites and original music.
With powerful vocals, soaring guitar solos, and an unmistakable love for performing, the band brings decades of musical influence together in a show that celebrates everything Barbara loves about rock and roll.
But The Daybreakers are more than a band performing the music that inspired them. They're also the next chapter in Barbara's journey as an original artist.
Unchained: The Next Chapter
In 2026, Barbara is preparing to record her third studio album, Unchained, and this time, she's bringing The Daybreakers along for the ride.
Featuring ten original songs, Unchained represents a new chapter in her musical journey, bringing together the classic rock influences of her childhood, the experiences that have shaped her life, and the musical chemistry of the band.
The album explores a wide range of themes, from love, faith, and personal freedom to the memories and experiences that connect us to the people and places we call home.
Supported by fans, friends, and a growing community of music lovers through a crowdfunding campaign, Unchained is more than another album. It's an opportunity to bring Barbara's original music to life with the band that now shares her vision.
More Than Music
Through life's unexpected turns, Barbara has found that music has always been more than entertainment. It has been a source of strength, a creative outlet, and a connection to the people and experiences that matter most.
From her childhood in Orangefield to the basketball courts of Lamar University, from the clubs and stages of Southeast Texas to the recording studio, every chapter of her life has contributed to the artist she is today.
And while her musical journey continues to evolve, the passion that started on her grandparents' living room floor remains as strong as ever.
Whether she's writing a deeply personal song, trading guitar solos with her bandmates, or stepping onstage in front of a room full of rock and roll fans, Barbara's goal remains the same: to make music that connects with people, tells a story, and leaves them with something worth remembering.
For Barbara Hickey, music isn't just something she does. It's part of who she is.
